Our Vineyards
Vineyard plantings in South Africa have a rich history, dating back to 1659 when the first vines were planted and wine was crafted in Constantia. Over the years, vineyards have expanded across the Western Cape and further north in South Africa, creating a unique terroir influenced by the proximity to the cold Atlantic and warm Indian oceans. The Mediterranean climate, with its long, warm summers, plays a crucial role in ensuring the grapes reach optimal ripeness.
Our vineyards boast diverse soil types that contribute to grape production. While these soils vary, most exhibit excellent water retention properties coupled with good drainage. Typically containing a minimum of 25% clay, these soils often have low pH levels, which are frequently balanced by adding calcium.
Among the key soil types in our vineyards are the Oakleaf soils, derived from granite, known for their strong physical characteristics and water retention abilities. Additionally, soils like Glenrosa and Swartland, originating from shale, offer robust structures and substantial reserves.
Embracing the art of blending, our vineyards naturally combine different soil types and microclimates, resulting in a harmonious fusion that yields distinctive fruit flavors in the grapes we harvest.
